Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele
Vita-Salute (Life and Health) San Raffaele University (USR) is a place of multidisciplinary culture and science that relate to human life. In USR scientific research goes hand in hand with the humanities, and the teaching is at the service of the individual. USR was built on the solid foundations of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (HSR), a separate legal entity that has a framework agreement to share resources, both human and physical, with USR.
The University has three Faculties: Psychology, focusing on general-cognitive and the experimental-clinical areas, Medicine & Surgery, and Philosophy. The Faculty of Medicine offers a choice of international Ph.D. Programs related to many aspects of biomedical science, ranging from cell and molecular biology, to immunology and neuroscience.
Research space is shared with HSR. Currently available are 12000 square meters of laboratory space, where 250 people are employed on long-term contracts, and a further 350 on short-term contracts. Within 2008 the space devoted to research will increase almost 3-fold, after 3 new buildings are completed. In 2006, 678 scientific papers were published, with a total impact factor of 3400. These figures confirm the leading position that HSR and USR have had in biomedical research in Italy since 1992.
